KAFU Meeting on 11 July 2025 at PETRI Berlin

The commission meeting, held every two years in Berlin, took place in 2025 at the newly opened PETRI Berlin. Before the session, Matthias Wemhoff guided the members through the building, which in a previously unique way makes the workshops, storerooms, and project areas of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History as well as the Berlin State Monuments Office accessible to visitors, enabling them to directly take part in current discoveries and research.

The most important resolutions of the meeting included, on the one hand, the admission of Ukrainian colleague Iryna Chechulina from the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv and her compatriot Kyrylo Myzgin from the Faculty of Archaeology at the University of Warsaw. With their admission, KAFU sends a clear signal of support for Ukraine while at the same time enriching the disciplines represented so far with Classical Archaeology and Numismatics. Both new members had also actively supported KAFU in its project to assist the museum in Sumy.

Already before the beginning of the session, Prof. Dr. Elke Kaiser from the Institute of Prehistoric Archaeology at the Free University of Berlin (for Prof. Dr. Michael Meyer) and Dr. Katharina Malek-Custodis from the Brandenburg State Office for Monument Preservation and the Archaeological State Museum had been unanimously elected as new members.

A second important resolution was the unanimous approval of the admission of a representative of the Faculty of Archaeology in Warsaw as a permanent commission member, in addition to the director of the MVF and the first director of the RGK. The election fell on Prof. Dr. habil. Adam Cieśliński, whose main responsibilities also include maintaining the newly established website.

Other key items on the agenda included the program of the 25th anniversary conference of KAFU in Złotów (2–5 July 2026), reports from members, and the future financing of commission meetings and conferences.

As a guest, Hans-Jörg Froese of Prussia, Society for the History, Archaeology and Regional Studies of Old Prussia, East and West Prussia e. V. attended the session. Chairman Matthias Wemhoff thanked him for his efforts to link Prussia with the MVF and KAFU. On 5 July 2025, at the Prussia general assembly in Duisburg, Heino Neumayer was elected president and Wojciech Nowakowski vice-president.
